In this short guide, I’ll show you how to quickly add an SQLcl-based MCP server in Visual Studio Code so you can start “talking” with your Oracle Database using AI. No complex setup, no huge framework—just a simple, practical workflow you can start using today.

This blog is part of a series about SQLcl - it's available here

Click View → Command Palette

Choose “MCP: Add Server” → “Command (stdio)”

As a “Command to run”, enter the path to your local SQLcl file and press Enter.

/Users/rg/apps/oracle/sqlcl/bin/sql

Give a unique name to your MCP server and press Enter. I called mine “mcp_dev” (same as my database user I will use)

Choose whether you want your MCP available globally or only in your current workspace. I selected “Globally”.

My new mcp_dev server is visible under the “Extensions” tab.

Full video from adding MCP is below:

Enjoy!

PS What's the cover photo? That's Cape Canaveral in Florida. Unfortunately, no space rockets are waiting for a launch at that time.
